Why ECGs need repetition, not last-minute review

ECG interpretation is a pattern skill, but it is not only pattern recognition. You have to check rate, rhythm, axis, intervals, morphology, ischemic changes, and clinical context without skipping steps. That takes repetition.

  • Estimate rate and rhythm.
  • Check axis, PR, QRS, and QT.

  • Tie the tracing back to the patient.

A deliberate ECG practice schedule

Start with 10 ECGs per week. Do them in short sessions so you can stay careful. For each tracing, write your structured interpretation, your top diagnosis, one dangerous alternative, and what clinical question the ECG answers.

As you improve, mix normal ECGs with abnormal examples. Normal tracings are not filler. They train you to avoid overcalling findings, which matters on wards and exams.
